DIAMOND VISION LED SCREEN
We don’t just come and go.
We stay here, this is home.
After installing huge Diamond Vision® LED screens in famous spots like
Broadway in New York, and Shinjuku in Japan, Mitsubishi Electric has now
placed one on the facade of SOGO in Causeway Bay, Hong Kong.
At 19.2 meters in height and 71.68 meters in width, the Diamond Vision® LED Screen is expectedly the largest LED screen anywhere
in the city, and a new landmark providing an amazing high-resolution daily visual
feast for Hong Kong people.

The biggest challenge of this project was to draw maximum performance out of the device despite the restrictions of the space where it is installed (i.e., the building is located on a narrow street). The screen is viewed from almost directly underneath it. Generally, large imaging devices do not offer a very good wide-angle viewing perspective because when looking upward from the bottom, a dark shadow appears at the top, making it impossible to see a part of the images clearly. This is caused by the louvers: a set of thin slats that run horizontally to fill the gaps between the LED panels. Louvers are essential for large imaging devices as they play an important role in preventing the deterioration of image contrast under the bright sunlight. If you try to eliminate this black shadow and reduce the length of a louver, then that all-important contrast deteriorates, while the viewing angle can be increased significantly. Accordingly, we researched the best possible louver length that would achieve the widest possible viewing angle and highest possible contrast simultaneously, by adjusting the louver length in increments of 1mm. We carried out highly accurate simulations with 3D models, because a 1-2mm difference makes a big difference. After numerous trial-and-error attempts, we attained the current optimal length.

Diamond Vision LED
It was a very hard work to raise as many as 370 panels into place one by one onsite, and then connect and align them perfectly, both vertically and horizontally. The installation technicians had to work in a narrow space that was a mere 60cm wide between the wall and panels when adjusting panel positions, which required considerable amounts of concentration. Standing in front of the screen, I instructed them, yelling “0.5mm further right, 0.5mm further down.” A slight shift in the force used during installation can cause panels to slip off-position, and we had to repeat the process all over again. The painstaking process took 20 men working nearly three months to complete, and it wore the technicians’ patience. I myself had lost 5kg by the time the installation was finished.

We struggled through the language barrier during the project. But as we kept working together day after day, we gradually developed a relationship to the extent that I joined them for lunch. It was a very challenging job, but I feel it was achieved thanks to the great bond that had formed among us and the cooperation of the experienced technicians.

After installing the screen, the reaction to the large LED Vision by the local people was overwhelming. They all looked up as they walked by, as if they were startled. I felt extremely proud.
